Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu has become the subject of international criticism and mockery after claiming that the Palestinian Mufti of Jerusalem is responsible for the Holocaust, saying that Hitler had wanted to only expel the Jews.
The White House warned Netanyahu Thursday of using “inflammatory rhetoric,” and Germany was quick to reassert that the Nazis alone were responsible for the Holocaust.
But it was Internet users all over the world who best demonstrated the absurdity of Netanyahu’s false allegations.
On Thursday, the hashtag #BibiHistoryLessons went viral with memes depicting Palestinians as responsible for numerous tragedies, including the sinking of the Titanic, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and even breaking up the Beatles.
In the popular HBO show Game of Thrones, cherished character Robb Stark is assassinated by supposed ally Roose Bolton. As Bolton stabs Stark, he whispers in his ear, “The Lannisters send their regards,” referring to the Starks foes.
Twitter user Lina_Serene posted a photo of the stabbing. But the caption read, “The Mufti sends his regards.”
A different meme held the Mufti responsible for the death of Bambi’s mother.
“Palestine told Bill Cosby to do it,” tweeted Tallulahs_Ghost, in reference to the alleged sexual assaults by the comedian.
“We’ve been lied to. It wasn’t a meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs. It was a Palestinian who threw a rock really hard,” wrote levantina_.
Other tweets jokingly pinned the original sin on Palestinians, saying that it was the Mufti who convinced Eve to eat the forbidden apple.
However, the damage from Netanyahu’s comments might be irreversible. Associating Palestinians with the most evil crime of the past century will only push Netanyahu’s right wing supporters further into extreme hatred.
“Don’t be fooled. Bibi’s ‘Death to Arabs’ mobs don’t care abt funny memes or whitewashing Hitler & are glad to pin Holocaust on Palestinians,” tweeted Peter Feld.
