NEW YORK — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump called for a “complete shutdown” of Muslims entering the United States.
In a statement, Trump cited anti-American sentiments in Muslim-majority countries as the reason behind his call. He also mentioned sharia law as a danger to American society.
“Without looking at the various polling data, it is obvious to anybody the hatred is beyond comprehension,” the candidate said. “Where this hatred comes from and why we will have to determine. Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life.”
Trump had previously suggested giving Muslim Americans special ID cards and registering them in a database. He also said he would look into closing mosques and promised to send back Syrian refugees who have been accepted into the country.
