KKK flyer being distributed in cullman and Decatur Alabama.
ALABAMA – The KKK in Alabama is recruiting Americans “to fight the spread of Islam in our country.”
The Alabama chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Alabama) on Wednesday called on public officials to repudiate growing Islamophobia following reports that the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is recruiting in the region.
KKK recruiting fliers have reportedly been distributed in Cullman and Decatur. The circumstances of the alleged distribution are not known.
Other KKK fliers, without a reference to Islam, were reportedly distributed in the same area in September.
“Our state’s leaders must speak out against the rising anti-Muslim bigotry nationwide that is apparently inspiring a new recruiting effort by racists,” said CAIR-Alabama Executive Director Khaula Hadeed. “The KKK must be repudiated, whether it targets African-Americans, Muslims or any other minority group with hatred and intimidation.”
The KKK’s presence appears to have increased in Alabama, especially in the last year.
Several African American residents notified police earlier this year when recruitment fliers attached to rocks were thrown on their properties.
Some 4,000 flyers were believed to have been distributed in the Selma and Montgomery areas last spring, both historic African American cities.
Their presence has also shown an increase in other states.
In November, CAIR and other civil rights groups condemned an apparent act of racist intimidation in Vermont in where KKK Fliers were left at the homes of at least two Burlington, Vt., residents, including that of a Black Lives Matter activist.
CAIR cited a recent spike in anti-Muslim incidents nationwide in the wake of the Paris attacks, the San Bernardino killings and Donald Trump’s call to bar Muslims from the United States.
