Community Hero Award recipients |
DEARBORN— Local community leaders received awards recognizing them as “Community Heroes” at The Lava Lounge in Dearborn Heights on Monday, Dec. 7.
Hosted by community activist Kimberly Ismail and presented by state Rep. George Darany (D- Dearborn), the award ceremony celebrated local business owners who have made positive impacts and contributions to their city.
Ismail said showing appreciation for community members who go above and beyond basic duties is important.
“Tonight is special because all the people here have contributed to their communities and just do it from their heart,” she said.
Whether it’s feeding the poor, helping children who have learning difficulties or defending Arab Americans, Ismail said the local leaders have helped the city stand out as an exemplary community among its neighbors.
The award recipients included The Arab American News Publisher Osama Siblani, Hype Athletics CEO Ali Sayed and Mangos Cafe owner Fawaz Hazime. Philanthropists and food drive contributors Abbas Khalil and Tarek Fahs were also awarded.
The certificates were signed by Rep. Darany, state Sen. Morris Hood (D-Dearborn) and Gov. Snyder. The city’s representative said they signed them because they recognize that strong cities make strong states.
Darany, who called Siblani “Mr. Dearborn”, said it is important to recognize community leaders because they make up the backbone of the community.
He added that local and state officials are often the ones applauded for their contributions, though they sometimes fall short.
“It’s up to our community heroes and members to pick up that ball and run with it,” Darany said.
He added that he is proud to represent a city that has strived to move in the right direction and said that Lansing officials are aware of Dearborn’s efforts.
