The courthouse on Thursday morning |
DEARBORN HEGHTS — A security guard fatally shot a man at the Dearborn Heights district courthouse after he confronted the officer with a knife, police said.
The incident occurred on Thursday around 8:45 a.m.
State police identified the suspect as Mark Henning, 48, of Dearborn Heights.
Henning was shot multiple times for refusing to drop the knife after pulling it out of his pocket, then charging at the guard.
Mayor Dan Paletko described the incident as an isolated event, ruling out terrorism or political motives.
“He is well-known to the criminal justice system; let’s leave it at that,” the mayor said.
The mayor added that the man was alone, and there is no danger to the community.
State Sen. David Knezek (D-Dearborn Heights) urged support for law enforcement agents.
“The actions of the attacker do not define us or the values we share as neighbors,” Knezek said in a statement. “The strength of our community lies in a simple belief: that which unites us is far greater than that which divides us. We stand together in opposing hate and violence in our community.”
