ARKANSAS – A Muslim couple in Arkansas dressed in a thobe and hijab are being taunted on social media and are planning to move after getting tossed from a mall while holiday shopping this weekend.
Alan and Daphne Crawford and their son were removed from Fort Smith’s Central Mall after shoppers grew concerned about the family’s supposedly suspicious behavior.
Cops said Alan Crawford was recording people in the mall, which was against the rules. Photos of the couple and their son being removed from the mall were posted on Facebook, and were shared several thousand times.
One of the Facebook posts included phrases such as “terrorist threat on the mall” and “Muslims have been scoping the layout of the mall.” The Crawfords were not charged with a crime.
“I probably would absolutely destroy a bacon cheeseburger or some fries with bacon on them or something like that,” Alan Crawford told the station after he was asked if he was a threat.
Sgt. Daniel Grubbs of the Fort Smith Police Department told media outlets on Tuesday that the Crawfords were acting suspiciously, and that the shoppers did the right thing by reporting them. Sgt. Grubbs said he believed the Crawfords had recently converted to Islam, and were seen in regular clothing the day after the incident.
“You can take race, religion and sex out of the equation,” Sgt. Grubbs said “Any suspicious activity, you encourage citizens to come forward with it.”
Alan Crawford said the family was merely doing some shopping and handing out cards for a local charity. He told the station that he did not see a sign at the mall entrance that banned recordings.
As a result of all the hostility, the Crawfords say they are planning to move.
“It’s sad really,” Daphne Crawford said. “Anyone can come up to us and ask us anything they want to ask us. We stopped and spoke with a couple in the mall and they ended up sticking up with us later on Facebook saying that they had met us and we were a Muslim family trying to do holiday shopping. It’s kind of scary.”
“Co-exist. Spread love not hate,” Alan Crawford told media outlets. “This is what this world is about. Whether you are Christian, Jewish, Atheist. I don’t care. Spread love not hate. I don’t care what religion you are. Killing someone for your religion is wrong. Completely wrong.”
