As the internet goes haywire over Lady Gaga’s awkward Leonardo DiCaprio nudge at the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards, an acceptance speech had Arabs talking and feeling proud.
The new show, Mr. Robot, won an award for Best Television Series-Drama, overtaking the beloved show Game of Thrones.
Sam Esmail, the award winning show’s creator, who also plays a leading role, graciously accepted the award and took a moment to thank his family in the United States and in Egypt, where the writer and director hails, saying “shukran,” Arabic for thank you.
He also thanked his cast, crew and fiancée, Emmy Rossum, an actress who introduced Esmail to the show’s star.
Arab viewers took to Twitter and other social media sites, praising Esmail’s nod to Arabs who often face negative representation in Hollywood and mainstream media.
Excited fans like @DenaKhalafalla tweeted “Sam Esmail just thanked his family in Egypt & ended his speech with “shukran” (trans. thank you)… I am crying. #MrRobot #Represent.”
Arab-German filmmaker and director Lexi Alexander tweeted “Ppl who have always been represented cannot relate to the rush of emotion you feel when someone of your tribe represents for the first time”
Esmail’s acknowledgment follows a major push by Hollywood stars for improved representation of minorities and gender equality in film roles. At last night’s Emmy Awards, actress Viola Davis daringly said in her acceptance speech “You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”
