DETROIT – Daytime talk show host Ellen Degeneres surprised Detroit Public Schools
with a donation of $500,000 with the help of Lowes and pop superstar Justin
Bieber.
Degeneres
and Bieber presented Spain Elementary-Middle School with the check via a live
video feed during her show.
The
revelations of dangerous conditions at Spain and other schools have sparked
numerous protests, a federal
lawsuit and discussions in
Lansing over a proposal for the state to pay off more than $500
million in school district debt.
$100
gift cards to Lowes were also provided to every teacher at the school.
Bieber
also surprised the students with a promise that $1 for every ticket sold in an
upcoming concert will be donated to the school.
The

previous weeks, teachers at Detroit Public Schools have staged sickouts in an
