Reconstruction of I-75 will begin this summer, with added lanes and smoother roads starting through Bloomfield Township, Auburn Hills and Troy.
The project is part of an eight-phase endeavor to rebuild approximately 18 miles of the freeway between South Boulevard and 8 Mile Road in Oakland County, according to a Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) press release.
The entire project is expected to cost $1 billion and will include a three lane expansion of I-75 and an extra left lane in each direction.
MDOT spokesman Rob Morosi stated that the lane expansion will serve as High Occupancy Vehicle lanes, requiring two or more passengers during high traffic hours, but are open to drivers otherwise.
The initial stage, costing $127 million and expected to start in July, will include “the replacement of five bridges, reconfiguring the interchange at Square Lake Road, constructing an additional through-lane in each direction, and making improvements to the Adams Road carpool lot,” said the MDOT.
