GARDEN
CITY – A
woman who robbed a gas station at gunpoint was convicted and received no jail
time.
Christina
Farris was identified as the woman on the surveillance video during the incident.
The footage aired on Fox 2 News and viewers were able to identify her.
Ali
Hammoud was the clerk at the Shell Gas Station on Middle Belt where the
incident took place. Farris robbed him at gunpoint and threatened to kill him
last November.
Farris
was charged with armed robbery following her arrest. They had also confiscated
the stolen scratch-offs and the stolen money she had taken from the gas
station.
Authorities
told Hammoud that she could spend up to eight years in prison for the incident.
However,
some time later Hammoud received a letter in the mail from the Wayne County
Prosecutor’s Office which stated that Farris’ charges were lessened an unarmed
robbery. She was sentenced to two years’ probation, community service and no
jail time.
Hammoud
told FOX 2 News that he was startled by the conviction and stated that he
believes she received no jail sentence because she was Caucasian.
“I
think if it was somebody with a different racial background say if it was a
black or Hispanic person, it would have been really different,” Hammoud
said.
The
Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said that Farris was not using a real gun
during the incident. Hammoud said he wasn’t aware of that and wouldn’t be able
to tell the difference.
“It
doesn’t matter,” Hammoud said. “If I think it’s a gun, it’s a gun.
Especially if it’s a shotgun too. It can be a bb gun I don’t know that.”
The
prosecutor’s office says Farris was sentenced within the guidelines according
to the reduced charge.
