LIVONIA — A 23-year-old Arab American college student died of a self-inflicted gunshot on Monday, March 14.
Nader Hage Ahmad’s uncle said he believed the 23-year-old’s death was an accident.
“We don’t know, yet. We are waiting for the police report,” Mohamad Hage Ahmad said.
However, weeks later, a woman who claimed to be Nader Hage Ahmad’s cousin said the young man deliberately shot himself.
“Nader was not playing with a gun, he bought the riffle with the intention of shooting himself and did just that,” the woman who wished not to be named said via Facebook message.
She criticized The Arab American News for reporting what the uncle said.
“Let’s try reporting events factually, then maybe you can be deemed worth of this title,” she said.
The late young man lived in Novi and attended Michigan State University, according to his uncle. The incident took place in Livonia.
“He was doing well,” Mohamad Hage Ahmad said of his nephew. “He was a successful student.”
Hage Ahmad was laid to rest at United Memorial Gardens in Plymouth on March 16.
Gun violence has claimed close to a dozen lives in the local Arab American community over the past two years, including several suicides.
