DEARBORN — DEARBORN — The second suspect in The Arab American News break-in attempt turned himself in to the police on Monday.
Kawayne Powell, 22, of Taylor, appeared in front of Judge William Hultgren on Tuesday. He was charged multiple felonies, including breaking and entering and malicious destruction of property.
Two men tried to break into the newspaper’s office in the early morning hours of Friday, March 11, while most staff members were in the building.
The suspects banged a hammer repeatedly on the backdoor of the office, but they left when the glass did not shatter to allow them in.
Deandre Bey, 20, of Detroit, was arrested last week in connection to the incident. He was charged with multiple larceny-related felonies.
A police source said the motive of the suspects has been determined to be robbery. Bey and Powell allegedly wanted to steal a laptop that was visible through the door.
Publisher Osama Siblani thanked the Dearborn Police for their swift action.
“Nabbing both suspects in a relatively short time will hopefully deter criminals from targeting the city in the future,” Siblani said. “I would like to thank Chief Ronald Haddad for his personal concerns and professional dedication to the safety of the residents.”
The publisher added that he is also grateful for readers, local media and government officials who expressed their concern for the paper and the staff.
