DEARBORN — Dignitaries and community members packed Byblos Banquet Hall on Wednesday, March 23 for Dearborn Trustee Fadwa Hammoud’s campaign fundraising event.
Hammoud was appointed to the Dearborn Public School Board last year, following the vacancy of Aimee Schoelles, who resigned after accepting a job in Ohio.
Hammoud is bidding to run for a full six-year term this year, in a quest to continue her strong ties with Dearborn Public Schools.
Raised in Dearborn, Hammoud graduated from Fordson High School in 2003.
While a student there, she served as president of the Key Club and Senior Class, took part in several school clubs and activities and was awarded “Most Active Student” by the National Honor Society.
Hammoud earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan-Dearborn. She obtained a law degree from Wayne State University and is now employed as a Wayne County assistant prosecuting attorney.
Hammoud is married to attorney Ali Hammoud. They have a son and a daughter.
Hammoud is a member of the American Arab Political Action Committee (AAPAC), along with fellow Trustee Mariam Bazzi.
The Arab American News Publisher Osama Siblani kicked off Hammoud’s fundraising event by discussing the importance of electing qualified officials to serve the community.
“We are here to make sure that our kids get the best education at Dearborn Public Schools,” Siblani said. “We are here to make sure we elect people who are responsible, successful and have proven that they are worthy of our support and our admiration.”
Schoelles was also in attendance to reflect on her time with the Dearborn Public School Board. She noted that near the end of her tenure, people would ask her who would be an ideal candidate to fill her shoes.
“Without hesitation, the first person that came to mind was Fadwa,” Schoelles said. “We all know that she’s qualified. Between her passion, education, work and life experience, she is a slam dunk.”
Hammoud took the stage near the end of the ceremony to thank the packed house of supporters. She said while she is grateful for the backing of the community, the focus must remain on ensuring that children are receiving a quality education.
“I want to make a positive impact on the district my own children will grow up in,” Hammoud said. “I want to make sure that our sons, including my son Hadi, have access to the best educational opportunities, they deserve. But I also wanted to make sure that our daughters, including my daughter Julia, have equal access to those opportunities. These are our kids, we owe it to them.”
Hammoud will be running for one of three seats on the Dearborn School Board this year.
