TAYLOR – A family from Taylor is shocked over the death of their 20-year-old son, Raheel Siddiqui, who according to military officials, committed suicide at a Marine base last week.
Siddiqui had long wanted to join the military. In early march he finally traveled to Parris Island to receive training at a Marine Base.
But just 11 days later, he would be dead.
According to the military, Siddiqui jumped off a 3 story ladderwell and plunged to his death.
The family said Parris Island officials said he threatened to commit suicide before the incident. Siddiqui demanded to be released from the military, but later changed his mind and said he would be continuing training.
The family told WDIV Channel 4 that the report said Siddiqui passed out during a drill and when awakened by a drill instructor he got up and ran out the back hatch of the squad bay and jumped over the ladderwell wall.
The family said Siddiqui knew what he was getting into and that they are skeptical he would take his own life.
According to documents, Siddiqui had met with a clinical psychologist on Parris Island.
The document said that on the first day of training, he told Senior Drill Instructor that he wanted to quit and commit suicide.
The psychologist noted;
”No current diagnosis, was highly motivated to continue Recruit Training, and is currently deemed to be at low risk for harm.”
Siddiqui was a 2014 graduate of Harry S. Truman High School in Taylor, where he was one of the top-10 students in his class.
