DEARBORN — If elected State Rep. of Michigan’s 15th District, which covers Dearborn, Norman Alsahoury plans to re-introduce programs into Dearborn Public Schools that have long been extinct.
He cited the D.A.R.E program, which sought to teach elementary students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol abuse, as a necessity. In the 90s, the program flourished with the participation of the Dearborn Police Department.
“I want to put more youth programs in place,” Alsahoury said. “Substance abuse and drug problems have become an issue and we need pro-active policing rather than reactive policing.”
Born in Chicago, Alsahoury, 26, moved to Dearborn in 2001 and attended Henry Ford College and the University of Michigan-Dearborn for law enforcement.
Alsahoury, who owns a business in Garden City, told The Arab American News that the city also needs stricter guidelines on how businesses should be running their operations. He cited an underage drinking and smoking trend at Dearborn’s local bars and hookah lounges.
Alsahoury is battling a pool of candidates vying to represent Dearborn in Lansing. However, he said he is dedicated to listening to the community’s concerns.
“What sets me apart from everyone else is I talk less,” Alsahoury said. “I show people what I’m going to do. People should be electing someone who they think is going to take the city of Dearborn in the right direction.”
He cited Dearborn as a city that holds high American values, stating the diverse community and large immigrant population is what makes it thrive. He said he would work to dispel the phobia against immigrants in Lansing, stating that they’ve contributed extensively to the economy.
He would also push for measures that would welcome more refugees to the local community.
“There’s a certain reputation that Michigan holds,” Alsahoury said. “When you come here, the city and state will care for you. You come into this place and you become family. There is no room for discrimination. We are all immigrants.”
He said he is dedicated to going door-to-door in order to hear concerns from local residents in the lead up to the elections.
Alsahoury said he is not shy about directly communicating with residents if they have concerns or questions. He can be emailed at:
