DETROIT – An exchange of gunshots left one man dead and another in critical condition in Detroit’s west side on Monday. An accident connected to the shooting also injured three bystanders at a bus stop.

Rameh Saab, 54, was fatally shot in what appears to be an ambush, according to his brother, Hassan Saab.

The incident took place near the corner of Grand River and Scotten.

Saab said his brother, who owns a mechanic shop, was heading to work in a silver Honda when he was struck by a bullet in the thigh. He also said his brother was bleeding profusely as he got out of his car and shot back at his assailant.

Saab said his brother then attempted to drive himself to the hospital but fainted after a few blocks, crashing his car into a bus stop, injuring three people.

The Detroit Police have not contacted the family, Saab added.

He said he is awaiting the outcome of the investigation, adding that his brother had been shot in Detroit before. 

He said he does not know who the other suspect is or if his brother knew him personally.

“It’s too early for us to tell what their connection is,” Detroit Police Deputy Chief David LeValley told the Detroit News of the link between Rameh Saab and the other suspect.

A police report obtained by The Arab American News says that the 40-year-old suspect was shot in the back of the head. He told police that he was shot first after a verbal altercation.

“Victim #1 indicated that he got into an argument with someone, when someone pulled out a gun and fired at him,” the report reads. “At this time, victim #1 pulls out his 40 cal. handgun and fires back at that person who was in (a vehicle).”

It is not clear how an argument started between Rameh Saab, who was in his car, and the other suspect, who was on foot. 

Rameh Saab was married and had two sons.

His brother described him as nice and funny.

“He was an outgoing person; he was loved by everybody; he was a very normal guy,” Hassan Saab said.
