DETROIT — Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert and Pistons executive Arn Tellem announced a $1 billion plan to turn Wayne County’s unfinished jail site into a project that includes a Major League Soccer stadium.
Detroit does not have a team the competes in the MLS. The planned site is essential for Detroit to secure an MLS franchise, said MLS commissioner Don Garber.
“The stadium and the stadium location is a very important and key part of this plan,” Garber said.
However, skeptics have voiced concerns about the plan. The county has already spent $150 million on the failed jail project.
Using the site for a soccer stadium would mean that the county has to find a new location for the jail.
The project is tangled in a web of complexities and accusations of misspending and corruption. Three county officials have been charged with willful neglect in connection with the jail’s construction.
Gilbert is advocating moving the jail to a nearby site on Mound Road.
“My concern is how do I build a jail for the cheapest amount of money that gets passed on to the taxpayers and how do I keep it on a timeline that we’ve been working on?” Wayne County Executive Warren Evans told the Detroit Free Press.
