Community activists celebrating the vote |
Fewer than 90 votes made the difference between modern facilities and the decaying infrastructure at Crestwood Schools. Dearborn Heights voters passed a $35 million millage for the school on Tuesday, with the Arab community playing a leading role in its success.
Crestwood Schools are in dire need of renovation and technology. Residents saw the need for investing in the children. They knew that the additional dollars they will pay in taxes will ensure a brighter future for the community. The millage will improve the safety and educational level in the classrooms, which will be reflected in the neighborhoods.
The “yes” vote will lead to a healthier city, raise property values and increase safety.
Arab American activists, politicians and parents in Dearborn Heights were leading the campaign for the “yes” vote, which was endorsed by our newspaper. This shows that the Arab community is invested in the city for the long term.
The vote is historic. Crestwood Schools tried to pass a similar measure in 2007, but it failed by a big margin. The infrastructure of the schools have not seen major improvement.
The vote was celebrated by community members, who know that the future of the city lies in the classroom.
The election also demonstrated once more the power of the Arab vote that proved decisive. We hope this will encourage Arab Americans to turn out in large numbers for future elections.
Arab businesses and residents have been vital to the stability of Dearborn Heights, which is becoming another anchor for the community.
Arab Americans are proving to be a transformative positive presence wherever they settle.
The “yes” vote was a statement by Dearborn Heights Arabs that they are there to stay.
We congratulate the community for this victory.
