WASHINGTON – In a victory speech on Tuesday night, Donald Trump made a direct appeal to voters dismayed that Bernie Sanders has lost the Democratic primary to Hillary Clinton.
“To those “left out in the cold by a rigged system,” he said, “We welcome you with open arms.”
He cited his opposition to the same trade deals that Sanders has railed against.
“We can’t solve our problems by relying on the politicians who created our problems,” Trump said.
Trump thanked the voters in the five states he won Tuesday night, and he promised, “Tonight we close one chapter in history and we begin another.”
Trump spoke at Trump National Golf Club in Briarcliff Manor, New York after he was declared the winner of the New Jersey Republican primary.
He read from a Teleprompter, something he often criticizes Clinton for doing.
He announced he will be giving a speech next week about “all of the things that have taken place with the Clintons.”
“The Clintons have turned the politics of personal enrichment into an art form for themselves,” he said, accusing Hillary Clinton of selling access and government contracts while she was secretary of state.
He also hit Clinton for her use of a private email server when she was secretary, which he claimed was “totally illegal.”
Laying out the threats America is facing across the world, Trump said, “Better hope I’m president.”
Although the event was billed as a press conference, Trump did not take questions.
He also did not address the ongoing controversy over his racial comments about the federal judge presiding over a lawsuit against Trump University.
Trump has faced harsh criticism from within his own party for repeatedly alleging that Judge Gonzalo Curiel could not be fair to him because he is of Mexican descent and Trump wants to build a wall on the border.
Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska, was among a group of Republicans who have vowed to not support Trump, labeled him a racist.
“Saying someone can’t do a specific job because of his or her race is the literal definition of ‘racism,’” tweeted Sasse.
