A raging woman who drove this vehicle verbally attacked Muslim shoppers at Kroger. |
DEARBORN HEIGHTS — Two Muslim shoppers were allegedly subjected to the fury of a raging, racist White woman who confronted them inside a Kroger, while they waited in line at the Western Union.
Jihad Elkharssa, who works in the distribution division at the AANews, was one of the victims verbally assaulted. He was in line in front of a Muslim woman named Bassina Chokr, who he didn’t know.
Chokr told TheAANews that her car had nearly collided with the White woman’s vehicle while they were in the parking lot minutes earlier.
She offered a sincere apology for her error of judgment to the white woman. But she would not let it go, especially once she seen that Chokr wore a hijab.
After Chokr got out of her car to enter the store, the white woman allegedly followed her in her vehicle and attempted to run her over.
Chokr, who isn’t fluent in English, apologized to her once again. But the woman was still apparently livid.
She stormed into the grocery store and unleashed a barrage of insults at Chokr while she was waiting in the Western Union line next to Elkharssa.
“You can’t drive here like how you drive back in your country,” the woman shouted. “This is America; go back to your country.”
Elkharssa said he had to intervene because the woman was being loud and offensive.
He also observed that Chokr barely spoke English, so he was left to defend her.
“I looked at her and asked her, ‘Why are you talking like that’?” Elkharssa said. “I pay my taxes. I follow the laws. I am a citizen just like you. There’s no difference. You don’t have to talk to her like that.”
He said the White woman’s tantrum drew the attention of the rest of the store and that she was screaming and lashing insults about both the Middle East and Islam.
At this point, a manager intervened and told the woman that she was being disruptive and had to leave.
Elkharssa said he encountered her once again when he left the store. She was arguing with the manager near the exit.
“She looked at me and said, ‘You better keep walking,” Elkharssa said. “That’s when I told her, ‘You know what, I’m calling the police.'”
Elkharssa said the woman ran to her car, a beige Chrysler 300, but not before he obtained her license plate number.
Ironically, her license plate included the word “CR8ZY”, perhaps accurately representing her demeanor at the shopping center.
Elkharssa said Dearborn Heights Police dismissed the incident when they arrived on the scene, claiming there was nothing they could do.
“The police said, ‘It’s freedom of speech, what do you want us to do about it?'” Elkharssa said.
He also said an officer named J. Ross dismissed Chokr’s claims that she’d been nearly run over in the parking lot.
“He looked at us and said, “Oh, now you are claiming that she tried to run her over?” Elkharssa said, adding that he expected more from the police.
The officer didn’t even run the woman’s license plate when he gave him the information.
“I think he should have at least talked to the lady first or checked on the victim,” Elkharssa said. “The Arabic lady said she tried to run her over and backed up the car on her. I didn’t know that until the lady told me and I translated it to the cop.”
Following the mass shooting in Orlando last weekend, local residents fear that a backlash will continue to grow against the Muslim and Arab communities.
Arab Civil Rights League (ACRL) founder Nabih Ayad told WXYZ Channel 7 that the Muslim community should not have to hear such verbal insults when they are partaking of their normal daily activities.
“When you allow the hate to get the best of us, we all lose,” Ayad said. “We can’t sit here and be dumbfounded and fall into the prey of what these hate mongers want you to think. And when you do that you are making them more powerful.”
