DEARBORN — Following the mass shooting in Orlando on June 12, the Islamic Center of America was the target of a social media threat via Twitter.
“People are really scared for their kids and their families,” Osama Siblani, publisher of The Arab American News, said.
Siblani was notified of the tweets, which listed an address for the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, on Sunday. The tweets read, “We must execute the Muslim scum. Full on eradication.”
Siblani immediately informed the Dearborn police chief, the FBI, the U.S. attorney and the Wayne County prosecutor, who are all taking it very seriously.
“At the same time that we’re mourning— like the rest of America— we’re very concerned about our own safety and our people’s safety,” Siblani said. “Frankly, we are very concerned. I think the situation is getting pretty bad.”
“Emotions run high and unfortunately people lash out at the wrong people at times,” said Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad. “And our community has not been spared. We’ve been targeted and we’ll continue to be vigilant. We are going to hang together as a community and keep everyone safe.”
Haddad said that there has been no specific threat found, but that authorities are in the process of tracking down the person who sent the threatening tweets.
“These tweets hold a certain threat because they can provoke others to act on them and therein lies our concern,” he said. “We are going to do our best to identify them, call them in, investigate them and hold them accountable.”
This is not the first time the Muslim community in southeast Michigan received threats.
In the wake of the ISIS terrorist attacks in Paris in November of last year, a Grand Rapids woman posted a tweet encouraging violence against Dearborn residents.
She later apologized for the post; she was never criminally charged.
