NEW YORK – Two teenagers were violently beaten outside a Brooklyn mosque early Sunday morning, CBS News said.
The incident allegedly happened around 1:18am at the Muslim Community Center of Brooklyn in Sunset Park, after lengthy evening prayers common during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The victims were two teenagers, ages 16 and 17. Both of them had volunteered to keep a lookout around the mosque, due to concerns of suspicious activity.
They were returning to the mosque after getting a snack, when they encountered a tinted and suspicious vehicle on 53rd St., near the corner of 3rd Ave — the side entrance to the mosque.
The teenagers were suspicious of the vehicle after a number of incidents involving prostitution and drugs consumption on the streets, which are common to the area, the mosque leader said.
The two teenagers approached a female in the vehicle, when suddenly a man came running from across the street and began attacking the two teenagers.
He was reportedly the boyfriend of the female.
One of the teens was treated and released, while the other remains hospitalized at Lutheran Medical Center with injuries to his head.
The suspect has been identified, but police are still looking for him.
No charges have been filed at this time.
Police are not classifying the incident as a hate crime, though the group Muslims Giving Back, posted to social media calling it “absolutely a hate crime” and calling for action.
