DETROIT — Detroit is now recognized as America’s
most stressed city by Wallethub.com, using a ranking system made up of five categories
and 27 different metrics.
The categories are work, money, family, health and safety
concerns, and coping abilities. Each category had a possible high score of 20
and included 27 metrics to gather the rankings.
Detroit surpassed second place Mobile, Alabama by more
than six points. The points between first and second place are nearly the same
between Mobile and 14th place Toledo.
Detroit ranked 10th in work-related, 14th in
money-related stress, first in family-related stress, seventh in health and
safety concerns, and second in coping with stress.
“We then calculated overall scores for each city
using the weighted average across all metrics, which we then used to construct
our overall rankings,” the
Wallet Hub post read. “With regard to our
sample, please note that ‘city’ refers to city proper and excludes surrounding
metro areas.”
The results post also presented more specific
rankings, like most and least average hours worked a week, highest divorce
rates and lowest credit score.
Grand Rapids ranked in the bottom five for the least
hours worked weekly. Detroit had the worst credit score, highest poverty rate
and third-highest divorce rate.
The
only other city in Michigan to make the list of 150 was Grand Rapids in 119th
place.
