A 14-year-old Dearborn teenager died after being pulled from the Huron River on the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 11., after jumping in the water to save his sister.
On Friday the family of Abdulrahman Labak mourned his death following the tragic incident in Ann Arbor. His sister is still hospitalized, but is expected to recover.
According to the family, his sister was struggling in the water while they were canoeing with their father.
Labak jumped in to rescue her, but ended up drowning.
EMS pulled him from the water and attempted CPR but could not bring him back.
At his funeral on Friday, hundreds came out to pay respect. Friends and family were hailing him as a hero.
He was described as a young man who loved his religion and liked to play soccer.
“He’s really a fantastic person and to see this outpouring of support it’s really fulfilling,” Omar Alhaider told FOX 2 News.
