DEARBORN — The Muslim American parents of fallen Capt. Humayun Khan will speak at the Arab American Civil Rights League banquet in Dearborn next month.
Ghazala Khan and her husband, Khizr Khan, engaged in a highly publicized feud with Donald Trump after the couple questioned the Republican nominee’s sacrifices at the Democratic National Convention.
Trump responded with sexist remarks, saying that the grieving mother might have not been allowed to speak at the DNC. He lost grounds to opponent Hillary Clinton in public opinion polls after those comments.
“We wanted to honor them because their son gave the ultimate sacrifice, dying for his country,” Nabih Ayad, an attorney who founded the league, told the Detroit Free Press. “We hear all the election rhetoric and ridiculous comments going on about Muslim Americans, presidential candidates talking about excluding Muslim Americans from this country.
“He’s speaking out against the bigotry and hate that has clouded a lot of our mainstream political discussion.”
In a speech at the DNC held in Philadelphia last month, Khizr Khan bashed Trump’s outlook on foreign policy and immigration, saying that if Trump had his way, his son would have never been in America. The father continued to criticize the nominees’ repeated smearing and outrageous remarks about Muslims, women and the Democratic Party’s leadership.
“Donald Trump, you’re asking Americans to trust you with their future,” Khan said, addressing the crowd. “Let me ask you, have you even read the United States Constitution?”
He then pulled out a copy of the Constitution from his pocket and said, “I will gladly lend you my copy. In this document, look for the words ‘liberty’ and ‘equal protection of law.'”
