DEARBORN — A 19-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle accident near Warren and Schaefer around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 28.
Mohamad Hazimi was riding his bike westbound on Warren Ave. when he struck a Jeep that made a sudden U-turn. The incident occurred between Jonathan Street and Bingham Street.
Surveliance footage obtained by The AANews shows that the driver of the Jeep made the illegal U-turn before Hazimi crashed into the vehicle.
Hazimi was killed at the scene of the crash. It’s unclear if he was wearing a helmet or other protective hear. The driver of the jeep sustained no injuries.
Witnesses included patrons at Sky Lounge, a hookah bar with outdoor seating. They described a very gruesome scene, claiming parts of Hazimi’s motorcycle had landed several hundred feet away from the crash site.
According to Dearborn Police, Hazimi was going well over the speed limit. He also did not have a valid motorcycle license.
Dearborn Police Chief Ron Haddad said the young man was driving in a “reckless” manner.
“Our condolences go out to this young man’s family and friends,” Haddad said. “But this is another example of an inexperienced motorcycle operator driving in a reckless manner. This is our fourth motorcycle accident in the past four months and we are urging the community to hold each other accountable for safe driving.”
Funeral services for Hazimi were held at the Islamic Center of America on Monday, August 29. An additional commemoration service will be held at the mosque on Sunday, September 4 at 11 a.m.
The accident marks the second fatal motorcycle crash in Dearborn within a month.
On August 8, a 21-year-old woman was killed while riding a motorcycle, after it crashed into another vehicle on the Southfield Freeway. Two others were injured in that incident.
Earlier this summer, a young Dearborn man was also injured in a motorcycle accident when he crashed his bike in Detroit.
