NEW HAMPSHIRE – The Governor of New Hampshire has been the target of Islamophobic ads during her run for U.S. Senate, and she’s not even Muslim.
Governor Maggie Hasan, who is running for the U.S. Senate, was the target of mailers sent by the political advocacy group One Nation, that references “Radical Islamic terrorists” and shows a crosshairs placed over children and the American flag.
The mailers use Hassan’s name to make it appear that she is a radical Muslim who is trying to gain authority in the country.
The Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relation (CAIR-MA), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization condemned the ads mailed to New Hampshire voters.
“The mailing intentionally invokes the specter of terrorism and associates Muslims with violence against civilians in a clear attempt to sway voters using Islamophobia,” said Dr. John Robbins, executive director of CAIR-MA. “This group is obviously exploiting both the candidate’s Arab and Muslim-sounding name and the growing Islamophobic sentimentin our nation.”
Robbins called on state and national Republican Party leaders and candidates to repudiate the Islamophobic intent of the mailer.
He said CAIR recently issued a brief, “Islamophobia in Politics: A 2016 Review,” in which the Washington-based group identified three key themes of Islamophobic political rhetoric this year.
Hassan, who is married to Thomas Hassan, has long been subjected to speculation that she is a Muslim.
Although last year, she was one of the first governors in the country to take a stance against accepting Syrian refugees.
