LUZERNE, MI – No one was injured after six training bombs
and one training missile accidentally fell from a military plane near Grayling
around 9 a.m. on Oct. 25.
The Michigan National Guard is investigating the incident,
but officials say mechanical failure is believed to be the cause of the release
of the weapons, which were on their way to Camp Grayling Air Gunnery Range from
the Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
The bombs and missile were found in the Mio Ranger District of Huron Manistee National Forest on
Sunday near Luzerne. Members of the Michigan National Guard recovered
them Monday.
The test weapons landed in an area of wildlife and private
property. No residential areas are around for 10 miles, Kate Salm, spokeswoman
for the Huron Manistee National Forest, told the Detroit News.
None of the weapons were explosive, although the bombs
release smoke so pilots can see whether or not they hit their target. Another
concern was that the bombs create heat.
“So if somebody got to them when they were
first dropped, potentially it could burn them,” Lt. Col. Dawn
Dancer, spokeswoman for the Michigan National Guard, told the News.
To Dancer’s knowledge, this is the first time munitions have
been accidentally dropped between those two locations.
“We have to wait until the investigation is
over so we know what happened,” she told the News.
