GROSSE POINTE — After Grosse Pointe South High School Principal Moussa Hamka, a Muslim, came under attack from a few parents following his message to students encouraging respect and unity after the presidential election, more than 100 parents and students showed their support at a school board meeting on Monday, Nov. 14.
According to WXYZ Channel 7, after several students told Hamka that some people were initiating hate after Donald Trump became the president-elect, the principal made an announcement over the public address system, emphasizing the importance of unity. He further emphasized support for different groups who might feel attacked, including minorities and gays.
After the address, several parents became angry and started a campaign to fire Hamka. However, students spoke on his behalf at the school board meeting; and out of all the parents in attendance, only one opposed Hamka, according to WXYZ.
