MENOMONIE — Police said they have identified a suspect in the death of 24-year-old UW-Stout student Hussain Saeed Alnahdi – but the man hasn’t been arrested nor has he been charged with a hate crime.
His name also hasn’t been released to the public.
Police Chief Eric Atkinson confirmed Monday the citations in the investigative report that has been turned over to Dunn County district attorney’s office.
Police have declined to release any details of the suspect or whether alcohol use was a factor pending review of the case by the district attorney’s office.
Police have ruled out a hate crime, Atkinson said.
“We just don’t have any evidence it was a hate crime,” he said.
Atkinson declined to say if the suspect and Alnahdi knew each other. Police have said the suspect is not a Dunn County resident or a UW-Stout student.
Alnahdi died Oct. 31 of a traumatic brain injury.
Alnahdi, 24, who came to UW-Stout from Saudi Arabia, was a junior majoring in business administration.
He was found unconscious in the 400 block of Main Street East in the early morning on Oct. 30 after a reported physical altercation and died Oct. 31 at Mayo Clinic Health System- Eau Claire.
Alnahdi was found bleeding from his mouth and nose, and witnesses reported he was assaulted by a 6-foot man.
Police have not said what led to the beating outside of a pizza shop in downtown Menomonie. The incident happened around bar-closing time as many people were dressed in Halloween costumes. The suspect fled on foot after the assault. Alnahdi died a day later from his injuries.
