LONDON — Fifty-one new emojis are likely to appear on smartphones next year, including people wearing hijabs, women breastfeeding, characters with beards and emojis representing older people, after phone makers proposed the additions, according to The Telegraph.
Unicode approved the new icons, which means there will now be a total of 1,724 emojis on smartphones.
Rayouf Alhumedhi, a 15-year-old in Germany, brought it to Unicode’s attention that there was no hijab icon to represent her. Unicode accepted her proposal.
The new list of emojis coming out for next year, called Unicode 10, will add to the diversity of the emojis even more. In recent years, smartphones have added more diversity by creating multiple skin tones for characters, hair colors and religious references.
Slated to be included are also a zombie, a vampire, a T-Rex and a person holding a finger to their mouth.
The Unicode 9 set of emojis is expected to be released by Apple in the next few weeks, which will include icons for facepalm, selfie, a clown and a pregnant woman, according to The Telegraph.
Anyone who wishes to make suggestions for new emojis must write a proposal to the Unicode Consortium.
