Senate bill 4, a legislation that would punish local and state government and college entities that refuse to comply with federal immigration officials laws or requests.
The bill, pushed by Texas state Sen. Charles Perry received its approval from the Republican controlled Texas Senate on Wednesday.
The vote projected a 20-10 turnout along party lines. With Sen. Jose Rodriguez (D-El Paso) absent, the vote had tentatively been approved 20-11. Many amendments offered by the state’s Democratic senators have been fought and defeated.
“Our review of the law concludes CSSB 4 is constitutional, there are viable methods for covered entities to avoid liability regarding invalid detainers, and the remainder of the legal concerns are unfounded,” said state attorney general Ken Paxton in a letter to Perry.
Heading to the Texas House this week, though it is unknown if the House’s lower chamber currently accepts the bill as presented. The Texas House has not yet confirmed committees and, consequently, has been noticeably slower than the Senate at shepherding the legislation forward.
