DEARBORN— Hey kids, what time is it?
It’s time for Dearborn Public School students to nominate their favorite teachers for the 2017 Alberta Muirhead Teacher of the Year Award.
“Nominating a teacher for this award is an outstanding way for students to show their teachers how much they appreciate and value the job they’re doing in the classroom and the positive impact they have on their lives,” Superintendent Glenn Maleyko said. “We have so many excellent teachers who are deserving of this recognition. I hope all of our students will take a few moments to nominate their favorite teacher.”
The Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the event, which is being presented by LaFontaine Automotive Group.
Students ranging from Pre-K through second grade are asked to describe how their teacher makes learning enjoyable. From third through fifth grade, students have to describe how their teacher has formed a classroom where learning is encouraging and exciting.
Middle school students have to explain how their teacher links classroom learning with everyday life, while high school students have to describe how their teacher is preparing them to be successful beyond high school.
A student cannot nominate more than two teachers.
A winner from each category will be declared at a ceremony held May 24 at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center. The assessment will be based on quality of the nomination, not on the number of applications received. Members of the Dearborn Chamber Education Committee are award judges and are not shown the teachers’ names.
“I want to thank the Chamber of Commerce and all the sponsors for once again hosting this event,” Maleyko said. “Our district is very fortunate to have so many great community partners.”
Nominations are due April 6 and forms can be picked up at any Dearborn public school or the district’s administration office, 18700 Audette. Forms can also be found online on the district’s website,
