DEARBORN- Dearborn Police are investigating a Monday night vandalism at the Northview Cemetery in Dearborn at Outer Driver and North Military.
Lt. Gary Mann of the Dearborn Police Department said the headstones were destroyed.
“About 35 headstones were damaged or kicked over,’’ Mann said, adding that police are investigating.
“My gut in cases like this is it’s always kids,’’ Mann said. “The cemetery is kind of in an odd location. I just don’t personally see a lot of guys getting drunk and hanging out over there, to be honest with you. We’re looking into it for sure.’’
Archivist for the Dearborn Historical Museum, Mason Christensen, told the Free Press that Northview is “one of the older cemeteries for Dearborn because basically it’s right by the older portion of town.”
It spans 18.5 acres of land, which makes it the largest in Dearborn.
“I think it happened Monday night,” cemetery superintendent Jim Toms told the Free Press. Toms said. “There were over 37 tipped over monuments. I hope somebody talks. Whoever it was they were pretty agile. They jumped the fence along Outer Drive. They seem to hit everything along the fence; within the first two to three rows. They didn’t venture into the cemetery very far. It was pretty significant. I’m trying to put them back up now. I’m halfway done.”
Toms said he wants to increase security, but hoped the police would be available around the area more.
“I might be able to put up another camera,” he said.
