DEARBORN- Police in Dearborn said they are grateful that a bank customer followed a bank robbery suspect and helped them make an arrest.
According to a press release, China Wells, 24, of Southfield entered a bank near Schaefer and Warren Avenue in Dearborn at noon on Friday. She “implied she had a weapon” and gave the teller a note demanding money.
Police said the woman escaped on foot while the teller was gathering the cash.
However, another bank customer witnessed the incident and called police immediately— giving dispatchers the suspect’s exact location and a clothing description.
“The suspect was quickly arrested with the help of the witness who continued to follow her until police officers arrived on scene,” the police release said.
Wells has been charged with armed bank robbery and is currently in jail.
Bond was set at $50,000 cash at her arraignment in front of the honorable District Court Judge Sam Salamey.
She is scheduled to return to court July 14 for a preliminary examination after a probable cause conference on July 7.
“We are grateful that a citizen took the initiative to contact the police immediately allowing us to quickly respond and investigate the matter,” Chief Ron Haddad said. “Due to the citizen’s willingness to get involved we were able to apprehend this suspect before she was able to commit additional crimes.”
