GROSSE POINTE – Edward Deeb will be inducted into the Michigan Recreation and Park Association Hall of Fame. The former Grosse Pointe resident worked to create, in collaboration with other leaders, the first Metro Detroit Youth Day.
Deeb came to the aid of former Mayor Coleman Young, who wanted to bridge a relationship between the youths in the area and local business owners. The idea was to invite young people to enjoy food, sports and other constructive activities for a day in appreciation of them.
Just over 35 years later Deeb’s event is still impacting more than 35,000 young people every year. The event even provides about 100 college scholarship opportunities each year.
Long before Deeb was a leader in the Michigan recreation and park scene he was creating organizations such as the Michigan Food and Beverage Association, Michigan Business and Professional Association, Eastern Market Merchants Association, Friends of Eastern Market and the Michigan Youth Appreciation Foundation.
Deeb’s accomplishments will now be forever remembered inside the Michigan Recreation and Park Association Hall of Fame.
