DEARBORN – A 38-year-old Westland resident is facing first-degree murder charges in the shooting death of a Dearborn man.
On Monday February 26, 2018, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office approved the following charges for Robert Gonzalez:
- Murder 1
- Felony Firearm
- Felon in Possession of a Firearm
- Habitual 4th Notice
Robert Gonzalez was arraigned before Judge Sam Salamey in 19th District Court on charges of first degree murder, felony firearm, felon in possession of a firearm and being a four-time habitual offender.
He was remanded to Wayne County Jail without bond.
A probable cause conference is set for 9 a.m. March 9 and a preliminary examination of the evidence against him will take place at 9 a.m. March 16.
“While this incident remains a tragedy for the entire community, I am grateful for the tremendous efforts of our department that resulted in the quick arrest of Gonzalez with no one else being harmed,” Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said.
Ismaeel Abdulla, a longtime resident of Dearbor, a husband and father of three, was shot and killed Friday night near Whittington and Canterbury on the city’s southeast side.
Rescue personnel responded to the scene and treated Abdulla, 37, who was shot in the head but later died, police said.
Investigators were able to identify Gonzalez as the suspect and tracked him to an address in Madison Township. He fled the scene on foot and was arrested at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in a parking lot in Adrian.
Dearborn police worked with the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police to make the arrest.
Based on their preliminary investigation, Dearborn Police said Gonzalez and Abdulla knew each other.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for funeral and burial expenses, as well as to help Abdulla’s wife and three children.
