DETROIT—Comerica Park will holds its first-ever Arab American night on Saturday, Sept. 22 as the Detroit Tigers face the Kansas City Royals.
“To the best of our knowledge, it’s the first of its kind in all of baseball at least,” said Jim Cleary, a sales executive for the Tigers, who came up with the idea for the event in June.
“We’ve got many ethnically themed nights,” he said. “so I thought, ‘why not have an Arab American night?’”
Cleary said themed nights at Comerica Park are intended to be inclusive and bring everyone together to appreciate baseball, no matter their differences.
He said that whether the theme is a university or ethnicity, “as long as you come out and enjoy the game, everybody is welcome.”
Cleary and his team worked with Saad Wholesale Meats in Eastern Market, which will supply a Halal knockwurst for purchase at the game Saturday.
While Cleary said he recognized that not every Arab American is Muslim, he’s excited that the park will be including a Halal option for those who are.
Every ticket package for the event includes a Sharifa Halal knockwurst voucher.
He said Saad connected him to Leaders Advancing and Helping Communities, formerly known as the Lebanese American Heritage Club, a nonprofit social services organization which supports education and health in Dearborn.
LAHC will receive a donation from Comerica Park from each ticket sale for Arab American Night. The game starts at 6:10 p.m.
