DEARBORN — “Halal Metropolis”, a traveling series of exhibitions by artist Osman Khan, photographer Razi Jafri and historian Sally Howell, will debut at the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s installation in the Stamelos Gallery Center next month.
The installation will highlight the role that food, fashion and holiday celebrations have played in augmenting Muslim visibility in the region. The title of the exhibit alludes to the established and growing Muslim population in Detroit and its metro area, and was created with the goal of exploring the ideas, aesthetics and cultures that make it up.
Halal Metropolis will be on view at the Stamelos Gallery Center from January 17-April 3. Gallery hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, 9-5 and Thursday, 9 -7.
The opening reception for Halal Metropolis will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, January 17, is free to the public and will include hors d’oeuvres and refreshments.
The location of the event is the first floor of the Mardigian Library in the Stamelos Gallery, located at 4901 Evergreen Road in Dearborn, 48128. Special music from the Maples Elementary Drum Ensemble will also be part of the event.
