DEARBORN — The Dearborn Police Department is looking for help identifying persons of interest who may have been involved in a shooting at MAYA.
The incident occurred on Monday, Feb. 1 at approximately 11 p.m. when officers responded to the Muslim American Youth Academy (MAYA), located at 19500 Ford Rd. in Dearborn, after learning that a shooting had occurred in the gymnasium.
The preliminary investigation revealed that an argument between two groups of individuals had escalated to gunfire.
A press release provided by the department said it was not a random act of violence and no one involved was associated with the school.
One individual suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. He is listed in serious condition.
Several other people fled the scene prior to the police arriving.
Police Chief Ronald Haddad is urging the public to come forward with information.
“Our number one priority is citizen safety,” he said. “It is important that any witnesses to this incident contact the Dearborn Police Department.”
