DEARBORN HEIGHTS – The recent blast of snow and cold temperatures have left many Dearborn Heights sidewalks still covered in ice and snow. The city’s Ordinance and Animal Control Department staff reminds all residents and business owners that it is important to keep all residential and business sidewalks clear of these hazards.
Keeping the sidewalks clear of snow and ice isn’t just a courtesy to those who use our sidewalks – it is a major safety factor this time of year,” Ordinance & Animal Control Director Bill Dishroon said. “Slip and fall accidents from snow and ice covered sidewalks represent a major and unfortunately a frequent problem that can result in a wide range of injures – ranging from minor bumps and bruises, to broken bones and sadly, sometimes even more serious injuries. These incidents can also result in significant (and expensive) liability-related issues between the victim and owner.”
Dishroon reminds residents and business owners that keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice is their responsibility. The city’s ordinance requires snow/ice to be cleared within 24 hours of the latest snowfall. Those not maintaining their sidewalks are subject to a violation notice, and/or ticket requiring a court appearance and possible fine.
“We know having to get out there and clear the sidewalks – especially when it’s this cold and the snow is blowing, can be an unpleasant experience,” Dishroon said. “But that’s just one of the responsibilities that go along with being a resident or business owner. We hope all residents and business owners will help us keep our sidewalks safe for our walkers.”
