WASHINGTON, D.C. – Starting at the beginning of this year, the federal government implemented new procedures and updated fees for obtaining or renewing a U.S. passport, which include increased costs.
To obtain a passport for the first time, applicants must pay:
-
$130 for the application fee.
-
$35 for the execution (processing) fee.
Total: $165.00
For passport renewals, only the $130 application fee applies — there is no execution fee if the renewal is done by mail or online.
In addition to these standard fees, applicants can choose optional add-ons:
-
$60 for expedited service, which speeds up processing.
-
$21.36 for priority delivery to receive the passport within 1 to 2 days after issuance.
Note: All fees are non-refundable, even if the passport is not issued.
Processing times
-
Routine processing takes approximately four to six weeks.
-
Expedited processing takes about two to three weeks.
For travelers with urgent needs, applications can be submitted under emergency criteria if the applicant is scheduled to travel within the next 14 days.
Required documents
In addition to submitting the application and paying the fees, applicants must provide:
-
Proof of U.S. citizenship (such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate).
-
A valid photo ID (e.g., driver’s license).
-
A recent passport-style photo that meets official standards.
When must you apply in person?
While passport renewals can generally be done online or by mail, in-person application is required in the following cases:
-
The applicant is applying for a passport for the first time.
-
The applicant is a minor under the age of 16.
-
The previous passport was issued before age 16.
-
The previous passport was lost, stolen or damaged.
-
The passport was issued more than 15 years ago.
