The City of Dearborn hosted its first public meeting on May 8, 2025, for the groundbreaking W. Warren Transformation Project. This initiative was made possible through Mayor Abdullah Hammoud’s successful effort in securing a $24.8 million “Safe Streets for All” grant, along with the vital support of Representative Rashida Tlaib, whose advocacy and assistance have been instrumental in securing necessary resources. This transformative project aims to significantly enhance safety and update infrastructure along the W. Warren corridor, providing a safer and more vibrant environment for residents, businesses, and visitors.
The public meeting served as a crucial platform for city officials and partners to present their comprehensive vision for the area’s improvement. Most importantly, it provided an opportunity for the community and stakeholders to actively participate in shaping the project’s initial plan, ensuring that the final outcome reflects the needs and aspirations of those who will benefit from it.
This initiative is just one of several projects currently underway in east Dearborn. The city is simultaneously working on the Lonyo Street housing project, which will provide hundreds of units much-needed housing units to help alleviate the local housing shortage. Additionally, the Warren Avenue Facade Improvement Program will provide eligible businesses with grants of up to $200,000 to modernize their storefronts, incorporating unique cultural elements that reflect the corridor’s distinct character.
Notably, the city is committed to ensuring that its initiatives benefit all area within the city even those that were previously neglected. To this end, the Facade Improvement Program will also be extended to the Dix-Vernor commercial corridor in the Southend, providing vital support and helping to revitalize the local business landscape.
Furthermore, the city is developing a Master Land Use Plan, a comprehensive and strategic initiative that will guide Dearborn’s development for years to come. This plan will help ensure that the city’s growth and development are aligned with the needs and aspirations of its residents, businesses, and stakeholders.
The city’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all its residents is also evident in its efforts to create vibrant public spaces. The development of three new PEACE Parks (PP South, PP North, and PP West) is a testament to the city’s dedication to providing welcoming and inclusive spaces that foster community engagement and social connection. Both Peace Parks West and East are complete, and work has begun on Peace Park South, located in the Southend between Wyoming and Salina Street. As a former resident of the Southend, I know firsthand how much this park will be valued, offering an excellent opportunity for both children and adults to enjoy their favorite sports. Scheduled for completion this summer, the park will feature green spaces, a soccer field, pickleball and basketball courts, and more!
The comprehensive array of projects and initiatives underway underscores the strategic leadership of Mayor Abdullah Hammoud and the tireless efforts of the City of Dearborn team. Mayor Hammoud’s proactive approach in identifying and securing crucial resources, such as the “Safe Streets for All” grant, demonstrates a commitment to strategic investment in the city’s future. The City of Dearborn team then expertly leverages these resources, working diligently across departments to bring these plans to fruition. This success is further amplified through strong collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders like Wayne County, whose expertise and support are invaluable in tackling complex infrastructure and development challenges. This synergy between city leadership, dedicated staff, other partners and the community is driving meaningful progress across Dearborn.
