DETROIT — Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Daylon Jamar Wooten, 16, of Dearborn Heights in connection with the homicide of James Newman, 17, of Inkster.
Wooten was charged as an adult designated. This means that if he’s convicted, the judge can determine at the sentencing hearing whether he’ll be sentenced as a juvenile, as an adult or under a combined juvenile and adult sentence.
According to a Wayne County press release, on Wednesday, February 26 at 1:30 a.m. Wooten was in the 24700 block of Lehigh in Dearborn Heights with Newman when the two men had a dispute. Both men were armed with handguns. It is alleged that Wooten fatally shot Newman.
Newman was taken to a local hospital by two men at the scene and later pronounced dead.
Aspects of the case remain under investigation and there are no further details at this time.
Wooten was charged with second degree murder, possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm. He had a preliminary hearing Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Juvenile Detention Facility.
