DEARBORN –  The city of Dearborn updated the fireworks ordinance in February of this year. While the amended ordinance restricts the number of holidays and the times during which residents can discharge fireworks throughout the year, more allowable days were added around Independence Day.

During and leading up to Independence Day, residents are permitted to use fireworks on the following days and times:

• Between 11 a.m. and 11:45 p.m. from June 29 to July 4.
• Between 11 a.m. and 11:45 p.m. on July 5.

Anyone found discharging fireworks outside of the designated dates and times are subject to a mandatory civil fine of $1,000.

The new laws do not affect professional displays authorized by the city, such as Greenfield Village’s Independence Day celebration.

The updated ordinance also incurs new penalties for other related violations.

The fine for use of fireworks on another person’s property without permission is $500. These include public, school or church properties. The penalty for use of fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance is a civil infraction with a fine of $1,000.

The change in the city’s ordinance comes after the state legislature approved three bills regarding regulation of fireworks usage in December. House Bill 5940 enabled municipalities to restrict when a person may ignite, discharge or use consumer fireworks.
