DEARBORN — After working at Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn for more than 20 years, Dr. Antima Gupta, a physical therapist who graduated with a doctorate from Wayne State University, opened Cure Physical Therapy in Dearborn, a clinic that specializes in women’s health and wellness.

Gupta told The Arab American News that she has been practicing orthopedic-focused physical therapy for almost 30 years.

Gupta is a certified Lymphedema [a type of cancer, a swelling in one or more extremities that results from impaired flow of the lymphatic system] therapist with more than 10 years of experience.

“One of the most common reasons someone seeks help from a physical therapist is to handle pain symptoms,” Gupta said.

“At Cure, we help Lymphedema patients lead a normal, happy, healthy Life utilizing Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (LDT) and Complex Decongestive Physiotherapy (CDP),” she added.

LDT is a hands-on technique that activates and cleanses the human fluid system.

CDP is a treatment regimen of compression system bandaging for the treatment of lymphedema.

“In addition to this, we treat cancer related physical conditions,” Gupta said.

“During my time at Beaumont hospital, we used to get a lot of patients from the Dearborn area who would request women physical therapists to fit the cultural needs of people,” she added. “And after the experience I obtained from working at the hospital, I needed some independence. So the idea came together.”

Cure specializes in women’s health and wellness, but is not limited to treatments for women only.

“We at Cure are open to all demographics, as long as you’re 15 years of age or older,” she said.

“Physical therapy as a service is kind of needed everywhere,” Gupta added. “It can be in any field, but with my Lymphedema training that I took years ago, I know the clinic can help people who undergo cancer treatments. It really is a requirement.

“I knew that I could use the training in my practice as an independent therapist here,” she added. “That’s what motivated me; I wanted to serve the community here.”

Before opening the clinic in April, Gupta did some work in home care while she was still working at Beaumont. She later obtained yoga certification through Lifetime Fitness for a holistic service to her patients.

Gupta is also registered with the yoga alliance, a nonprofit association representing the yoga community.

“A lot of the people don’t know what Lymphedema is and how it requires pain management,” Gupta said. “So it is important for the community to know that there is a cure for the pain associated with Lymphedema.”

She added that many patients come in with back and shoulder pain.

“In this community, women put so much effort in making sure that their families are doing okay, and often neglect their own health,” she said. “It is important to make sure that your health is intact, and that is what Cure offers.

“Being a woman, I understand the women patients,” she added. “And we have Arabic speaking staff who can assist Arabic speaking patients at the office as well.

“Here at Cure Physical Therapy we understand the problems patients face with this and we are ready to provide you with the resources and therapy to begin on the road to return to a normal, happy and healthy lifestyle.”
