BIRMINGHAM – The City Commission approved a temporary measure last week to suspend short-term residential rentals through platforms such as Airbnb and Vrbo following a shooting incident at a party held in a rented home.
The party, which took place on the evening of April 11 at a residence on Lincoln Street near Adams Road, had been promoted on social media. A dispute between attendees escalated into an argument and later into gunfire at approximately 6:15 a.m.
Police responded to the chaotic scene and arrested three suspects, all 18-years-old, on charges of assault with intent to murder.
On Monday, the Birmingham City Commission voted to impose a six-month moratorium on issuing new short-term rental permits. Other cities, including Dearborn and Dearborn Heights, have already enacted full bans on such rentals in residential neighborhoods.
