DEARBORN HEIGHTS – During the Sept. 22 city council meeting, the Dearborn Heights City Council appointed a new council chair and council chair pro-tem.

In a 4-2 vote, Councilman Hassan Saab was appointed to be the new council chair while Councilman Bob Constan was appointed to be the new council chair pro-tem. Councilman Tom Wencel and Councilwoman Denise Malinowski-Maxwell were the two no votes.

Saab has been on the city council since being elected in 2023 and served as council chair pro-tem since 2025 and Constan has served on the council since 2013.

The appointments come just over a month after former Council Chair Hassan Ahmad was appointed to the Wayne County Commission.

With Ahmad’s appointment to the Commission, he left behind a vacant council seat.

The vacant seat will be filled by a candidate of the city council’s choosing. 

The city is accepting applications for the seat to be filled until the Nov. 2, 2027 election. Whomever is elected will serve out the term through Dec. 31, 2029.

To be considered for the position, applicants must be a 2-year resident and a registered voter in the city. Interested residents are asked to submit a letter of interest outlining their qualifications, including educational background, work history, and any public service experience.

Letters of interest must be received by the City Clerk’s office no later than 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Applicants will then give a brief presentation lasting up to five minutes to the council at 6 p.m. the same day. 

The council will vote during the regular City Council meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
