The Canadian government is now lending its voice to the objections raised by airlines to U.S. demands for information about passengers flying over the U.S. to destinations outside Canada such as Mexico and the Caribbean. Homeland Security wants lists of passengers and information about them — when reservations were made, method of payment, meal ordered, and seat selection — 2 hours in advance. Canadian Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon has filed objections with U.S. Homeland Security, pointing to privacy concerns. Cannon recognizes that the United States has the right to ask for such information by virtue of its sovereignty over the air space. However, he argued that Canadian measures to insure security are already robust. Apparently, Homeland Security would like to know who is ordering a halal meal.
