Back in May, 2004, Shahid Mahmood was prevented from boarding an Air Canada flight from Vancouver to Victoria because a name similar to his was on a no-fly list. This was before Canada’s official list was put in place this year. Just last month, he filed a complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Commission, as he believes that had he not been a Muslim he would not have been treated in this manner. The complaint is endorsed by the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group, the Canadian Arab Federation, the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations, and his M.P., Peggy Nash. In a letter to Nash, Air Canada declared that it “does not, and did not, practice racial profiling. . . .Passenger bookings are automatically flagged if the name of a passenger is a close match to a name appearing on a security list.”
